The Housing and Development Board (HDB) has announced an extension of the Parenthood Provisional Housing Scheme (PPHS) until December 31, 2025, aimed at supporting young couples and families during their wait for Build-To-Order (BTO) flats. This decision is part of HDB’s ongoing efforts to provide timely assistance to families who find themselves in transitional housing situations while awaiting the completion of their new homes.

The extension is particularly significant as it ensures that families can continue to access vital support during an often uncertain waiting period.

Under the PPHS, eligible families receive a rental reimbursement of $300 per month, which helps to alleviate the financial burden of renting interim accommodation. This monthly assistance is provided on a reimbursement basis, allowing families to offset a portion of their rental costs.

By offering this financial relief, HDB aims to ease the stress associated with balancing interim housing expenses and preparing for future homeownership.

The extension of the PPHS is expected to benefit approximately 200 households, demonstrating HDB’s commitment to improving access to housing for those in need. To qualify for the scheme, families must meet certain criteria, including having booked an uncompleted flat from HDB’s sales exercise and maintaining a household income of $7,000 or below.

This income cap is designed to target support towards families who may require additional assistance as they transition to homeownership.

In conjunction with the extension of the PPHS, HDB has outlined plans to increase the supply of PPHS flats significantly. By the end of the year, HDB aims to provide 4,000 units, a substantial increase from the 800 units available in 2021.

This increase in supply is essential to meet the growing demand for affordable interim housing options, particularly as more families enter the queue for BTO flats.

The extension of the Parenthood Provisional Housing Scheme is a timely response to the challenges faced by young couples and families navigating the housing landscape. As the waiting period for BTO flat completion can vary, the availability of interim housing support becomes crucial.

The scheme not only provides financial assistance but also offers peace of mind to families, allowing them to focus on their future without the added pressure of unaffordable rental costs.
